DISCOVER TRANSFORM ACHIEVE

  • Campus: Agora

The Agora in ancient Greece was a place of public assembly, a forum, marketplace or public square for exchange of information and goods. We are extracting this idea of multi-lateral exchange of information and interaction for the Agora platform. The Agora is envisioned to be a democratic, student oriented and experimental public realm. The Agora encourages cross-disciplinary interaction, which is critical in this Knowledge Age. A large, continuous and sheltered informal meeting space for students, the Agora is the paradigm and extension of the ground void deck concept. The air-conditioned and carpeted Agora thus creates an innovative and comfortable form of learning environment for the campus.

Programmatically, the Agora contains the Library, informal Reading Spaces, Mass Assessment Halls, Specialized Labs, Lecture Rooms, Auditoriums and Cafeterias. The Library is located towards the southern tip for better public access and to address the main entry into the Agora level.

In contrast, the Reading Spaces are less structured where spontaneous activities could occur. These spaces also serve as break-out areas next to Lecture Theatres, Lecture Rooms and the Mass Assessment Halls. They are located along the fringe to allow visual connection to the surrounding green and to allow direct access from study clusters.

Thermal comfort promotes a myriad of informal and unplanned activities in the interstitial spaces within the formalized programmatic spaces. These include yoga spots, ping-pong spaces, music corners, lounge areas, etc. These informal interactive spaces are grouped around several internal courtyards, which serve as direction markers as well as bring in natural light and nature within the Agora. The Agora will also serve as a cultural exchange node where informal exhibitions could be held and artwork could be placed.

The Wet and Specialized Labs, Lecture Rooms, Auditoriums are interspersed below the footprints of the 11 Pods around the core to allow greater accessibility for students in the Agora as well as from the Pods above.
