Scholarship/ Bursaries/ Book Prize Awards
RP remains committed to channel the donations we have received to improving the welfare of our students in the form of bursaries, scholarships, book prizes and other financial assistance schemes.
Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding academic records who have completed at least one academic year at Republic Polytechnic based on a ranking, the applicant’s choice sequence, and any other criteria/limitations specifically applicable to each award. No applicant shall be in receipt of one or more other sponsorship or scholarship/bursary for the academic year in question.
36 awards of scholarships were awarded to our well-deserved students in financial year 2009/2010.
Bursaries
We have awarded 39 bursaries to our students in financial year 2009/2010 on a need basis. Factors such as total gross household income, number of members in the household and any special needs/medical expenses of members in the household will be taken into consideration. No applicant shall be in receipt of one or more other sponsorship or scholarship/bursary for the academic year in question.
Book Prizes
Book Prizes are awarded to students with outstanding academic performance and any other criteria/limitations specifically applicable to each award.
A total of 172 book prizes were awarded to our students in financial year 2009/2010.
Needy Student Fund
In financial year 2009/2010, 2 schemes were initiated to help financially needy students and one of the schemes Student Emergency Money Scheme was officially launched in October 2009.
(1) Student Emergency Money Scheme (SEMS)
The objective of this scheme is to provide compassionate assistance to students in emergency situations. It is intended to assist students during times of crisis by providing financial support where a clear need exists. This scheme is made available to full time students of Republic Polytechnic.
In the year, 7 students have received help under this scheme.
(2) Student Pocket Money Scheme (SPMS)
The objective of this scheme is to alleviate the financial burden faced by low-income families in providing for their children's education. This scheme is initiated to heighten awareness of the plight of RP students from low-income families who are attending full time diploma programmes without bus/MRT fare, proper breakfast, or pocket money to sustain their day in campus. At the same time, this scheme will help our students who are already facing difficulties in remaining in campus to stay on.
Glitz Award (Sports Excellence Award)
RP Sports Excellence Awards is awarded to students of RP as a step towards encouragement for participation in sports in RP and as recognition of sporting excellence among student athletes. In financial year 2009/2010, with sponsor’s support, we have disbursed the award to 1 sportsman and sportswoman of the year each and 3 RP Athlete Development Grants.
Other Activities
During the year, we have run other programmes with the donors’ support such as the National Pushcart Challenge organized by Centre of Innovation & Enterprises, Maths & Science Challenge 2009 by Centre for Science & Mathematics, PBL Symposium by Centre for Educational Development & Technology, Clean and Green Week by School of Hospitality, Cold Box Design Competition by School of Engineering, overseas study trip by School of Technology for the Arts.
We have also upgraded “The Panacea”, a health and beauty store, run by School of Applied Science, from pushcart to a designated outlet with proper display unit to promote pharmaceutical products and functional foods (in-house innovated products). The objective is to give the opportunity to students to learn through hands-on activities about retail and merchandising by managing and maintaining the inventory of “The Panacea” retail store, and sell over-the-counter health products to staff and students. Through this, students will be given the opportunity to develop patient counselling skills and gain an appreciation of the role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in healthcare teams.
In 2005, Centre for Culture & Communication (CCC) has raised fund for Sports Innovation for Special People. With the consent from Director of Centre for Culture & Communication (DCCC), this fund was transferred to School of Sports, Health & Leisure (SHL) who utilized the raised fund to organize Sports Carnival event in October 2009. This is an event for special needs adaptive sports activities.
