Assessment Criteria
The Republic practices a modular system of education
and assessment. Over
a semester of 16 weeks, you will take 5 modules,
each of which consists
of 16 one-day problems; on any one day, therefore,
you will only tackle one problem. Your final
grade for each module will depend on two things:
your daily performance at working on the module's
16 problems, and 4 timed understanding tests
taken at different points during the semester.
The evaluation of your daily performance will
be conducted by your facilitators. It will take
into account the level and quality of your participation
during group discussions and activities, as well
as your effort on the short quizzes and journal-report
which you will be required to file for the problem
at the end of each day. The four understanding
tests, which you will take over the course of
the module, consist of a variety of questions
that will allow you to demonstrate your understanding
of key concepts as outlined in the module's learning
objectives. These tests are designed to reward
the creative learner rather than the student
who learns by rote and repetition.
At the Republic, we also believe in rewarding
consistent performance. Therefore, we will only
use a selection of your daily grades and the
best 3 of your understanding test scores to compute
your final module grade. There will be no semester
or year-end examinations.
