Formation of 5th Polytechnic Working Committee
A working
committee chaired by Prof Low Teck Seng comprising representatives
from the public and private sectors was formed to provide inputs on
its establishment and formulate an implementation plan.
19 Aug 2001 Announcement by PM on Establishment of 5th
Polytechnic
Prime Minister
Goh Chok Tong announced the establishment of the 5th
Polytechnic during the National Day Rally 2001.

1 Jan 2002: Appointment of 5th Polytechnic Project Director
Prof Low Teck
Seng was appointed on 1st January 2002 as the Project Director to lead
a small team in recruiting staff and preparing for the official
establishment of the new polytechnic.

Submission of 5th Polytechnic Working Committee’s
Recommendations to Ministerial Committee Meeting
The
recommendations by the committee were submitted to the Ministerial
Committee Meeting on 24th Jan 2002.
24 January 2002: Guess
the Name of the 5th Polytechnic Competition
On 24 Jan
2002, the 5th Polytechnic Project Team launched an online competition
to provide a name for the proposed 5th polytechnic in Singapore. Over
2000 submissions were received.
8 March 2002: First
Tender Called for the Series of Renovation Contracts for the Temporary
Campus at Tanglin
The first tender
was called for renovation works for the Tanglin Campus.
20 May 2002: PBL Pilot
Project with Selected Secondary Schools
A pilot
Problem-Based Learning project, Creative Computing, was
launched with several secondary schools to pilot the PBL approach with
students. Response from students, teachers and principals was
positive.
22 May 2002: MOU
signing with National Library Board
The Republic and
the National Library Board entered into a collaborative arrangement to
provide library management and information services. The Memorandum of
Understanding was signed between Prof Low Teck Seng and Dr Christopher
Chia, NLB’s Chief Executive at the NLB headquarters at Millenia Tower.
1 July 2002: The Move to Tanglin Campus
The team moved
into the Strathmore Block of the Tanglin Campus on 1st July 2002,
relocating from its temporary office at the Data Storage Institute at
the National University of Singapore.
8 July 2002:
Announcement of Republic Polytechnic Bill
The Republic
Polytechnic Act 2002 was passed by Parliament on 8th July 2002.
1 August 2002: Establishment of Republic Polytechnic
The Republic was
officially established on 1st August 2002 by Minister for
Education, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean.
16 August 2002: First
Board of Governors
Meeting
The first meeting
of The Republic’s Board of Governors was held on 16th August 2002.
29 August 2002: Review of Woodlands Campus Winning Design by Minister
for Education
The Board of
Governors approved the award of the winning design to DP Architects
and Maki & Associates. Subsequently, Minister for Education
RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean
reviewed the campus model design together with Board members.
14 September 2002:
Start of School Outreach Programme
200 secondary
school students attended our first outreach programme, the Creative
Computing Showcase-cum-Prize Giving Ceremony at the Woodlands Regional
Library Auditorium on 14 September 2002. Guest-of-Honour was A/P Chin
Tet Yung, MP for Sembawang GRC. This is also our first contact with
the Woodlands community. Subsequently, Principal and staff went on
roadshows to publicise The Republic to secondary school students,
teachers and principals.
9 December 2002:
Launch of our Corporate Logo
A nation-wide
logo design competition was held to invite professional and amateur
logo designers to design our corporate logo. The Republic’s corporate
logo was officially launched on 9th December 2002 by Mr Lee
Hsien Yang, Chairman of our Board of Governors.
23 December 2002: Organisational Climate Survey and Launch of
Performance Management System
The Republic
conducted its first Organizational Climate Survey in December 2002.
All in-service staff participated in this survey conducted by The Hay
Group. The majority of staff indicated that they were happy with the
working environment at The Republic and our organisational culture.
Also, by December 2002, the first staff appraisal exercise was
completed, based on the new performance-based Performance Management
System.

30 January 2003: Launch of First Issue of PBL Newsletter
The inaugural
issue of Reflections on PBL, our in-house newsletter covering
PBL and the current trends in PBL education was launched.
10 January 2003: First
Corporate Planning Retreat
The corporate
planning sessions, carried out between December 2002 and January 2003,
culminated in the first corporate planning retreat held on 10th
and 11th January 2003. Staff discussed corporate
strategies, key performance indicators and departmental workplans for
2003.
25 February 2003: MOU
Signing Ceremony with 33 Industry Partners
Minister for
Education, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean witnessed the signing of The
Republic’s MOU with its 33 industry partners. This collaboration
signified their support and commitment and their endorsement of our
unique teaching and learning pedagogy.
28 February 2003:
Career Fair-cum-Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE)
The Republic held
its first ever JAE at Parco Bugis Junction. Over the six days, staff
were on hand to offer admissions advice and course counselling to
potential school leavers.
3 March 2003: Start of Earth Works at Woodlands Campus Site
The first stage
of work on the site started. Construction work is expected to be
completed by 2006.
