Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is the core educational strategy behind RP’s learning pedagogy. Through PBL, learning is achieved by solving real world problems or scenarios. PBL-trained facilitators guide and engage rather than teach, allowing students to develop skillsets through active participation in the learning process.

The PBL system provides a fun atmosphere for us to study and it has helped us
to be independent and creative. In fact I joined Republic Polytechnic because it had
implemented the PBL system.

Two unique components of our curriculum are Creative Engagement and the Professional Profiling Programme.

As part of our holistic educational approach, Creative Engagement (CE) was introduced as a unique component of the Industry Orientation Programme to help students unleash their innovative spirit and creative potential. Each student is required to participate in CE activities such as competitions, technical and enterprise talks, skill development work and social or community events. Points are awarded for the different categories of activity and count towards the requirements for graduation.

To date, almost 100% of Year 2 students have participated in various categories of CE activities.

During the year, the Professional Profiling programme was introduced for Year 2 students as a component of the Industry Orientation Programme. The programme is designed to prepare students in their personal growth and development as well as career management. In the programme, each student is expected to put in an equivalent of 15 days of work by giving an insightful account of an individual, profession, company, department, industry cluster or any combination of these, before submitting a report on the profiled subject. This is followed by an interview by a panel of at least three assessors.
