Our Partners' Support

The students showed their pioneering spirit and infectious level of enthusiasm and vigour by pouring their energies into clubs and societies, sports and arts activities.

In the area of sports, the Sports Club organised a monthly Sport-A-Sutra with activities including Healthy Lifestyle Week, Republic Premier League (5-A-side soccer), Inter-class Captain’s Ball, Inter-school Foosball Tournament and Sports Camp, all in the name of promoting a healthy lifestyle among students.

Our students did themselves proud in their first participation in the IVP (Inter-Varsity Polytechnic) games, putting in a creditable performance, particularly in bowling and weiqi. Our very own staff member, Janelle Koh, lifted the RP name when she was selected to represent Singapore in soccer in the ASEAN Games in Vietnam.

The many different clubs and groups offered students a widespread buffet of outdoor activities, ranging from kayaking and rock climbing to diving, abseiling, and leadership and safety courses.

Besides nurturing the body, we also saw events to nurture the mind. One of the highlights of the year was the Poly Forum, an annual gathering of students from all five polytechnics to discuss an extensive range of topics over three days. Beating the odds of our small numbers, our first year students gave impressive performances, even clinching two of the eight speaker positions for the final presentation.

Various cultural events were organised to raise awareness of the diversity of backgrounds and cultures among our students. Some of the celebrations were in conjunction with local festivities, such as the Mooncake festival, Deepavali, Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year; while others like the Myanmar cultural show aimed at showcasing the richness of our international student population’s ethnicities.

Big in mind, big in heart – that could be said about our students as they unhesitatingly gave their time to the less fortunate. From washing cars with MINDS (Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore)to assisting the less educated with the e-filing of their taxes, our students were there to lend a helping hand.

Ren Ci Charity Event

Our students helped out in the light display for the Ren Ci Charity Event

Other community events they participated in include the Ren Ci Charity Event 2004 where students from the School of Information & Communications Technology performed with other community groups and schools to form a light display on an HDB block in Taman Jurong. The Henderson Community Project also saw our students lending a helping hand. Eighty RP students sacrificed their nights and Sundays to knock on doors of three-room HDB flats and see if any residents required welfare or assistance from voluntary organisations. Tact, a keen eye and thick skin were the criteria of the day.

The One-Stop Centre (OSC) offers a convenient one-point contact for students and members of the public. It provides integrated services such as school transactions and applications, and handles all enquiries on courses, loans, accommodation and so on.

During the year, the OSC serviced at least 16,000 members of the public on all RP-related matters. It introduced the Virtual Career Guidance Portal which offers one-stop information on career preparation, online self-assessment tests, temporary job placements, as well as articulation programmes with the local universities. Supporting this service, a calendar of career development talks and workshops was also organised.
