Information and Communications Technology

The School of Information & Communications Technology (SIT) offered four diploma programmes during the year, namely:

Diploma in Business Applications (DBA)
• Diploma in Business Computing (DBC)
Diploma in Information Technology (DIT)
Diploma in Information Technology Service Management (DSM)

At the end of AY06-07, SIT had an enrolment of 1789 students and 82 staff members.

During the year, SIT launched its fifth diploma - the Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media (DIDM). Evolving from the highly popular multimedia specialisation track of DIT, the DIDM was a response to the projected rise in demand for manpower in digital media by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA).

Eight SIT graduates were accepted by the Singapore Management University (SMU) into the BS Information Systems programme.

Achievements

A team of SIT students took part in the Splash Awards 2006 – 3G Live! organised by the Singapore Computer Society (SCS). Our students competed with other IHLs for the top prizes in the Consumer Application and Business/Enterprise categories. Against the odds, they beat entries from NUS and the other polytechnics to place first in the Business/Enterprise category.

A team of students from SIT and STA won the ‘Best Art’ award for the 30-hr GFX code-a-thon held at Nanyang Polytechnic on 7 and 8 December 2006. RP was the only polytechnic to clinch an award. Our students, Eugene Soh, George J Parel and Neo Jia Rong, Eric also won a three-month internship with game company, Koei, which will take place after graduation.

Events

During the year, SIT organised a national-level competition called Network and Security Investigation (NSI), focusing on IT System Defenses and Digital Forensics. Supported by IDA as part of the National Infocomm Competition, the NSI competition was recorded and aired on MediaCorp TV. It received firm support and sponsorship from industry leaders such as Microsoft, Symantec, AccessData, Acer and Sony. Some 32 teams comprising upper secondary school students took part in the competition.

For the third year running, SIT organised the ActionScript.Awards, which was supported by Adobe and Going The Extra Mile for Service (GEMS). The competition required participants to come up with an interactive storybook along the theme of “The Art of Service”. The competition attracted over 38 entries from both students and industry professionals.

A group of five SIT staff went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Hack In The Box Security Competition and Conference (HITBSecConf) 2006. The conference series aims to enable the dissemination, discussion and sharing of deep knowledge network security information. Featuring presentations by respected members of the mainstream network security arena as well as the underground or black hat community, the HITBSecConf2006 saw over 30 of the world’s leading network security specialists present their research and findings.
