Harnessing Technology

RP was awarded the bronze medal for our project on “Pervasive Wireless/Mobile IT infrastructure for an Integrated Paperless Campus” under the “The Enterprise Challenge (TEC)” Public Service Innovation Award (PSIA) 2006. The award is a testimony to RP’s success in building a paperless campus for both our academic and administrative functions. RP was among 12 public sector organisations and the only educational institution in Singapore to receive this TEC Award.
RP has implemented the MediaRing IP Phone solution for every new staff. This will run parallel with the existing IP Phone System from Cisco System. The advantage of the MediaRing solution is that it offers a cheaper alternative to the Cisco phone system and provides more scope for customisation. It also offers more economical overseas calls from anywhere in the world.
Enriching Learning Environment
RP has replaced the web-based UT with UT3.0 system. The new system was developed within six months and allows us to achieved nearly 100% paperless UT. The system has significantly improved productivity and lessens administrative work for academic staff. Before the new system was implemented, about 10% of students do UT on paper. With this new UT system, the load on the computer system and network has also been reduced significantly. The same server hardware was used to support an additional 2,000 students, helping us to save about S$120,000.
A graduate portal system was developed to allow RP graduates to view past items during their education in RP. It includes e-Transcript, activities such as creative engagement, professional profiling, and final year project. Students can also track their resumes online. The same system will be used for a pilot project on Personal Digital Portfolio. RP also enhanced security on Learning Environment Online (LEO).
This year, to engage the community, RP opened its wireless network to the public. For the first time, RP allowed the public to tap on our wireless network during our Career Fair in February 2007 and PBL Symposium in March 2007.
