RP Archery IG co-organises its first competition, Sembawang Archery Open 2009

The Republic Archery co-organises with their
close associates from Sembawang Archery Club in the Sembawang
Archery Open 2009 on 23 and 24 May.

It was not easy, coupled with bad weather and unfavourable shooting
conditions, to host such an important event. However, the team had a
very rewarding experience. We were grateful to Mr David Tan, Treasurer of Archery Association of
Singapore (AAS) and Continental Judge, to assist us. It was an eye-opener to learn how
to organise such a large-scale event. We have to learn everything from field orientation to how a
competition would flow. These are things that an archer would normally not be able
to learn.
Despite having manpower to manage the event, we still sent 5
archers to compete in the Recurve Intermediate category (1 round at
50 metres and 1 round at 30 metres). This category is also open to all age groups.
Our archers had to compete against opponents from other institutions and
clubs island-wide. There were many archers with years of shooting experience.
It was definitely challenging to train for the competition and co-organise the event.

On the first day of the competition, we arrived earlier to prepare the shooting
grounds for the competition. The first event was the Individual Rankings for the Under-12 and
Under 16 categories. Although we were not competing in these categories, we were
kept busy. Unfortunately, the weather was unfavourable and a storm soon poured over the shooting ground.
The event was postponed to the next day. Despite feeling disappointed and
weary, the team was not discouraged. It was passion for this sport that kept them going.
On the second day, the Individual Rankings for the Intermediate and Open categories were
held. Our coach, Florence Ling, a former National Archer and Silver Medalist in the 1995 Commonwealth Games trained
our five archers and with her guidance they were able to compete against strong opposition with ease.
Our team manager, Nigel, clinched a 4th placing with a score of
605 and missed the bronze by 14 points. Individual Knockout (IKO) Rounds and Team Knockout
(TKO) Rounds was supposed to be held on the second day. Our team competiting for these events consist of Bjorn,
Elwin and Nigel. They were mentally prepared to face the challenges ahead.
Unfortunately, the knockout rounds were scrapped and
all scores were based on the Individual Rankings due to lack of time.

In the end, our team nicknamed Ben-10 did us proud and brought back the
Gold for the Recurve Intermediate Male Team Category.
Congratulations to our archers who fought hard and despite all the setbacks. The gold medal is the best testimony!
