Entrepreneurship Education Program

Program Synopsis

The EEP Program seeks to be the key thrust for promoting entrepreneurship learning among secondary students in Singapore. As seen in Diagram 1, the EEP program consists of both workshop sessions (1 full day) as well as application session (1 full day). Structured based on 3 key sessions, the workshop sessions serves 2 key purposes, namely, to stimulate the thought process of students by generating/evaluating innovative business ideas as well as to provide the relevant business skill sets (e.g. 4Ps of marketing) needed to setup their business successfully. Using various worksheets and activities, the EEP program seeks to provide a lively and vibrant learning environment to translate their thoughts into reality.

One key differentiating factor unique to the EEP program introduced to secondary school students will be the adoption of RP's Problem Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy in the 1st session of this program. Students will learn the foundations and fundamentals of the PBL approach as well as apply these learning principals in the session on “Business Idea Generation and Evaluation.”

The other key differentiator will be the adoption of the pushcart platform for the business setup. The pushcart platform was selected due to its merits in providing low entry barriers for secondary school students to showcase their business ideas. Beyond this, the pushcart platform also provides the opportunity for students to come up with various strategies to attract customers to their pushcarts.

Working in groups of 5-7 people, these students are required to participate in 3 workshop sessions (Session 1 -3). Each workshop session will be activity focused consisting of group discussions as well as activities.

Session 1 introduces the concept of a business idea to students. Conducted using the PBL pedagogy, students will employ techniques such as brainstorming and concept maps to generate various business ideas. In line with the PBL pedagogy, students will also be given the opportunity to research for various business ideas online before subsequently evaluating the viability of their business ideas. When generating business ideas, various parameters or guidelines will be shared with the students that define the scope and nature of how their own business is to be conducted. Beyond this, students will be given the liberty to adopt and implement their business ideas as long as it is within the guidelines set.

Session 2 focuses on the marketing aspects where the 4 Ps (Price, Place, Product, and Promotion) will be covered in detail. Students will be required to devise various strategies for implementation in Session 5. Session 3 essentially covers the financial aspects of their businesses. Students will learn how to keep track of the finances of their business and also learn how to calculate the mark-up and breakeven for their products/services. Key points pertaining to various financing sources will also be shared in this session.

Session 4 is essentially a review session where students are required to submit a business plan for evaluation. A business plan template will be provided to the students for submission. This is followed by the actual business setup in Session 5 where students will set up their business using the pushcart platform in RP.

The EEP program will end at Session 6 with a review session designed to help students reflect on the strengths and weakness of their business setup.
