Talk by Standard Chartered Bank: “Continuous Improvement”

Ms. Lydia Lim, Vice President of Standard Chartered Bank, will share insights on how a global organisation like Standard Chartered Bank value Continuous Improvement (CI) and embraced it as a corporate objective; what constitutes CI and what procedures/processes  the Bank has put in place to implement CI as an organisational-wide initiative. Talk by Fraser & Neave Group: “Preparing for Overseas Assignment”

Mr Wong Luck Jaen, GM of Corporate HR, will share F & N Group’s experience on how employers & employees can prepare for international / overseas assignments; the success factors and things to avoid for such assignments; the pre-posting preparation and what should be done to prepare the employee upon arrival at country of posting; and post assignment actions when the employee returns to home country (especially after a long period overseas). This talk is scheduled on 17th October

National Pushcart Challenge 2008

HDB Toa Payoh Hub

In its second year running, the National Pushcart Challenge (NPC) was initiated as a platform for all secondary schools who have participated in CIE’s Entrepreneurship Education Program (EEP). Through this competition, secondary schools will be given the opportunity to pit their entrepreneurial skills with each other in this nationwide competition This competition seeks to raise the profile of the EEP as well as to bring together schools on a common entrepreneurial platform to enhance students’ learning.

Building on last year’s success, this year’s competition sees 132 students from 22 schools participating in this competition. NPC 2008 has also been invited to be part of a global entrepreneurship initiative titled Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) that sees various youth entrepreneurship engagement activities being organized concurrently in more than 60 countries around the world from 17 -23 November 2008 (http://unleashingideas.org/theweek).

Co hosted by NUS Entrepreneurship Centre and Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE), NPC 2008 is the key highlight for the launch of GEW where this will be held on 17 – 18 November at HDB Toa Payoh Hub. The Guest of Honor for this event is President SR Nathan where he will be giving out prizes to the winners of the National Pushcart Challenge.

SOH Students' Involvement in Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix

26 - 28 Septemper 2008

F1 venue

The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will be a week filled with events by sponsors, multi-nationals, and companies hosting special events for their business partners, and countless overseas clients to Singapore for this Formula 1 experience. All these will translate into spin-offs for the other tourist attractions, hospitality industries and businesses. Our SOH students will get to be part of the action. 56 of our Diploma in Customer Relationship and Service Management (DCRSM) students will be involved in serving food & beverages and providing good customer service from 26 to 28 Sept 08.  This will be a golden opportunity for them to gain first hand Formula 1 experience in Singapore

Another batch of 10 students from the Diploma in Integrated Events Management (DIEM) and Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management (DHHM) will be acting as F1 service ambassadors.  Their role will be to provide key F1 and tourist product information for visitors during the F1 period. They will be stationed at key tourist touch points such as Orchard/ Marina belt, Clark Quay and Boat Quay, etc.

CE Talk on Dining Etiquette

Table manners play an important part in making a favourable impression. They are visible signs of the state or our manners and are therefore essential to professional services. Conducted by our very own DHHM Academic staff, Nicholas Lee, this talk aims to allow him to share his expertise and knowledge with RP staff and students on the basics of proper dining etiquette.

DHHM Industry Speaker Series: F&B Managers’ Association & The Little Red Dot Academy

To end the calendar year with a bang, DHHM will be organizing two talks for the Industry Speaker Series which will be of interest not only to our School of Hospitality students, but also students from the other schools. Student keen on a career in the Food & Beverage and the Airline industries surely look forward to these two talks.

In October, we will be having a speaker from the Youth Wing of the F&B Managers. It is hoped that this talk will enlighten our students and cultivating interest in the F&B profession. On the other hand, in November, we will be having with us The Little Red Dot Academy Pte Ltd (LRDA), a globally recognized hospitality and consultancy company headquartered in Singapore. Its Aviation Hospitality course provides greater opportunities for graduates to pursue an exciting and rewarding career in the friendly skies. The LRDA trainers each have more than 10 years of experience in Singapore Airlines and other international carriers, as well as ample experience working in other sectors of the service industry. Definitely a talk not to be missed!

Hotel FUZE IG Retreat

During the upcoming Oct-Nov break, Hotel FUZE Exco members will be conducting yet another fun-filled activity specially created for Hotel FUZE members. Fuzers will be encouraged to participate in a 1/2 day-retreat within RP, where they will get to take part in various teambuilding activities and get the chance to mingle with the DHHM Academic staff who will be sharing their experiences in the hotel industry. This will be a golden opportunity for them to get to know each other better and build closer bonds within the cohort.
