Advanced Diploma in Pharmacy Practice
Introduction : About the Programme
The Advanced Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (ADPP) is an integrated programme that allows the application of scientific and practice skills to learn the technical as well as social and behavioural aspects of pharmacy practice, to prepare students for a career in the pharmacy industry.
The advanced diploma comprises four practical modules with the objective to provide students with hands-on practical experience in a clinical and retail pharmacy setting, and to experience compounding extemporaneous preparations and aseptic dispensing. It compliments the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences, in that the four modules delivered are practical applications in direct contact with the hospital inpatient, outpatient, as well as patients visiting the retail pharmacy.
The ADPP includes attachments at local retail pharmacy chains such as Guardian Pharmacy and pharmacies in hospitals such as Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Students will present a number of case studies highlighting the pharmacy technician’s and pharmacist’s role in patient management, and the application of evidence based practice. These practice modules are facilitated by practicing professionals and experienced academics.
Upon completion of the programme, students are expected to:
- demonstrate sound technical abilities based on pharmaceutical science knowledge;
- acquire the clinical skills and attitudes required to deliver effective patient care within the healthcare sector;
- be able to effectively communicate with the public, patients and members of the healthcare team.
The ADPP admits students who are enrolled in the third year of RP’s Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPHM), Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (DBMS) and Diploma in Biotechnology (DBIO) programme. Through one of these programmes, students will work for the Advanced Diploma. In this way, RP students who obtain good grades will be able to complete both the respective Diploma (DPHM, DBMS or DBIO) as well as the Advanced Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (ADPP) within their three years at RP.
In addition, the ADPP is open to diploma graduates with a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences or an equivalent qualification from other polytechnics. Registration for the ADPP is also open to “Experienced People” with “O” level certification or equivalent (with prerequisite pass grades in English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject), supported by at least 4 years of relevant work experience. Formal certificate level qualifications from recognized institutions will be considered favorably. Such applicants will be required to pass a comprehensive examination in the pharmaceutical sciences before admission to the ADPP.
