International Programme in Biomedical Sciences
Introduction : About the Programme
Pathway to a Degree
The International Programme in Biomedical Sciences (IPBMS) is the result of a collaborative effort between Republic Polytechnic and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University, Australia. It offers polytechnic students in the field of biomedical sciences an additional pathway to gain a degree.
The IPBMS admits students who are enrolled in the third year of RP’s Diploma in Biomedical Sciences programme. Through this programme, students will work for an Advanced Diploma and their Diploma concurrently. When students complete their Diploma and Advanced Diploma, they will be able to apply for admission into the third year of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science course at Monash University.
In this way, RP students who obtain good grades will be able to complete both the DBMS as well as the Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (ADBMS) within their three years at RP.
The ADBMS is also open to candidates with a Diploma in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification from other polytechnics or from overseas institutions. Such candidates will also be able to study for the ADBMS.
Such applicants however may be required to pass an assessment before admission to the ADBMS and are encouraged to contact the course organizers to assess their application.
Studying in a Medical Faculty
As the Bachelor of Biomedical Science course at Monash University is offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, students have the opportunity of working closely with medical researchers and practitioners at the cutting edge of research in diverse domains of the field of biomedical sciences. Practical sessions conducted by the Hospital-based departments allow students to experience first hand the range of high-class medical institutions at Monash.
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences offers an attractive range of elective units covering a broad range of academic areas. Students can choose to specialise in Neuroscience or take electives that compliment their degrees, like Nutrition and Dietetics, Human Origins and Development and the Human Being in Health and Illness. Students can also choose to take electives from other Faculties.
On completion of the Bachelor’s degree, students who do well may go on to complete their Honours year, followed by further study and research for the PhD degree. Students may also apply for admission to a postgraduate medicine programme offered at a few universities in Australia.
