International Programme in Biomedical Sciences

Pathway for RP Students

The International Programme in Biomedical Sciences (IPBMS) is a programme to allow students to enter the third year of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science course at Monash University. The IPBMS is now being offered to selected students in RP’s Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (DBMS) programme.

The information given here is for students currently enrolled or intending to enrol in RP’s DBMS programme. It sets out an accelerated pathway which can be taken in order to complete the IPBMS in three years at RP, so as to obtain both the Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (DBMS) and the Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (ADBMS).

Requirements for DBMS

In order to be accepted by Monash University under the IPBMS, DBMS students will need to:

  • take “Option I: Biomedical Sciences” as their specialization, which includes the following four modules:
    • A321 Proteomics
    • A322 Genomics
    • A331 Cell Cycle and Oncology
    • A332 Structural Biology
  • take for their four electives the following three modules:
    • A233 Pharmacology and Toxicology
    • A224 Recombinant DNA Technologies
    • A351 Medical Microbiology
  • take as the fourth elective any other module from any offered by the Schools and Centres
  • obtain a GPA of 3.00 or better for the DBMS

Requirements for ADBMS

All IPBMS students need to take the four compulsory modules in the ADBMS, which are:

  • A311 Bioinformatics
  • A204 Anatomy & Physiology II
  • A205 Biomedical Sciences
  • A234 Neurobiology

Accelerated Scheme

Students with sufficiently good grades may be allowed to take the accelerated scheme, which means they can complete the IPBMS in three years at RP. To do so, students must take one elective module in each of the semesters during their second year, and then take all four ADBMS modules in their third year.

The table below compares the modules taken in a typical DBMS programme with the modules taken in the IPBMS programme.

IPBMS students will be advised to plan their activities so as to complete these four non-classroom modules within the three years. In particular, SAS staff will assist IPBMS students to work for the Project modules during the vacation periods.
