Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management (R11)

About the Programme

In the current context of rapid technological advances, globalization and the increased emphasis on sustainable development, the challenge is to develop efficient and sustainable engineering solutions as Singapore continues to build up its capabilities and niche technologies.

Our Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management (DIOM) programme equips you with the necessary practical skills and broad-based knowledge to optimise engineering solutions through applications of industrial engineering (IE) concepts and various productivity tools widely employed by the industry. This programme blends in specialist knowledge of quality engineering, human factors engineering and project management, which will further hone your skills and provide you a competitive edge.

DIOM programme supports the growing needs of the engineering services, logistics and manufacturing industries by providing graduates with in-depth understanding and process know-how to meet the needs of the industry and tomorrow’s engineering challenges.

Programme Objectives

The DIOM programme aims to nurture students in becoming knowledgeable and enterprising young professionals who can apply their skills to meet the needs of the industry. By the end of the course, students will be effective learners who will be adept in the art of problem solving as they equipped themselves with the necessary IT skills and process know-how to meet future challenges.

This programme will provide a well rounded education that comprises of both the technical and general. Discipline and specialization-specific modules will equip the students with a solid understanding of engineering and business process flow, quality control, reliability engineering, project management, lean and six sigma process, operations planning, optimization and inventory management. The programme will also give students a strong grasp of manufacturing planning and control, facilities planning and design, quality management, human factors engineering and simulation. General modules offer an excellent foundation in innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, as well as train them in communication and life-long learning skills.

Students in this programme will have the opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in our Quality Engineering Laboratory and use of software tools in areas of Computer Aided Design (CAD), simulation, statistical analysis and logistics management.

Final Year Project (FYP) and Internship Programme

All DIOM students will be required to work on a Final Year Project during their final year of study. They will get an opportunity to interact with practitioners and work on industry-related projects with outcomes that can be applied to the real world. More information on our engagement with the industry can be found here (http://www.rp.sg/tdc/scm/industryengagement.html).

DIOM students can look forward to an internship programme during their course at RP. They will get an opportunity to work in companies in the electronics, healthcare and engineering services sector, to name a few. This gives them a valuable avenue to interact with employees and employers of the participating company, and acquaint themselves with possible future roles in the company. The industrial projects and internship programme will prepare students for the working world when they graduate.

RP-UniSIM Through-Train Degree Programme

Under the RP-UniSIM Through-Train Programme launched recently, students from the Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management have the option to pursue a part time Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors Systems from UniSIM, concurrently while they are studying for their diploma in RP. This allows students under this programme to obtain their degree in as short as one and a half years after they have graduated from RP.

Career Prospects
Graduates can look forward to excellent career prospects in various industries. They will have ample opportunities to begin their career in industries ranging from engineering services, manufacturing and logistics industries. Various job opportunities as associate engineers in areas of quality assurance, quality control, reliability, manufacturing, product testing, logistics, transportation, planning, purchasing and inventory management are available.
Further Studies

The School believes in and advocates the pursuit of higher education beyond the polytechnic programme. Our diploma programmes are designed to meet the requirements for advanced standing in local and overseas Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL).

You can pursue a management related degree in NUS, such as the BSc (Project and Facilities Management) or a business degree from SIM University. Or you can consider an engineering degree either in NUS or NTU, in areas such as Industrial, Materials, Mechanical or Bio Engineering.

If you intend to do an overseas degree, you can consider among others, University of Birmingham (UK), University of Leeds (UK), University of Liverpool (UK), University of Adelaide (Australia), University of New South Wales (Australia) and the Australian National University (Australia).
