Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning (R33)

Graduation Criteria

To graduate with a Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning, you must satisfy the modular criteria set by the School of Sports, Health and Leisure. Students should be able to do this within three years of enrolment, if they successfully complete on average five modules, or its equivalent, per semester.

How the Modular Structure Works

Modules at the Republic Polytechnic fall into three broad categories, as can be seen from the course structure. They consist of Core modules, Elective modules and Freely Chosen modules. To satisfy the requirements of the Diploma programme, you must complete all the compulsory modules and a specified number of modules from selected categories. You are also required to satisfy the requirements of the Industrial Orientation Programme. These are summarised in the following table:

Table 3: Modular Requirements for Graduation in the DOAL

Module Category Number of modules required for graduation Total number of modules offered
Core General 10 10
Specialisation 6 6
Discipline 3 3
Electives/ Freely Chosen 4
Industrial Orientation Programme 7
Total 30
Core Modules

There are three types of Core modules: General, Discipline-specific and Specialisation-specific modules. General modules aim to help you prepare the ground for generic skills, communication skills, entrepreneurial concepts and skills, mathematical methods, science and marketing concepts, as well as a web and new media design.

Discipline-specific modules focus on developing your knowledge of Outdoor and Adventure Learning while specialisation-specific modules are designed to deepen your understanding of the specific area within Outdoor and Adventure Learning.

Elective Modules

You also need to take a number of Elective modules offered by the School, besides the Core modules. Elective modules are designed to broaden your understanding of the growing field of sports, health and leisure, and to complement your knowledge acquired from other parts of the programme. You can select any 3 module units offered by the school.

Freely Chosen Modules

1 of the 30 modules can be freely chosen from the entire range of modules offered at RP.

Industry Orientation Programme

Students have to accumulate at least 40 Creative Engagement points, as well as complete and pass the Professional Profiling component and final year project by the end of the third year.
