Why Sports is a growing industry in Singapore
The Singapore Government has made a clear
indication to grow sports as a viable industry and
making the country into a Sporting Nation. The Government is also building world-class
sporting facilities and infrastructure such as
the Sports Hub to take Singapore’s sports scene to a
higher level.
Singapore is bustling with lots of excitement and
development in moving towards an active and vibrant
sporting nation. Annually, numerous local and
international sports events are being hosted and
organised in Singapore. Singapore has witnessed the
first Formula One night circuit racing in 2008,
the first Asian Youth Games in 2009 and
the inaugural Youth Olympics Games (YOG) in 2010.
These events and facilities seek to raise
national pride and Singapore’s standing in the
international sports fraternity as well as boost the
country’s economy.
Sports Excellence at
Republic Polytechnic
Our school is committed to grooming suitably
qualified professionals for the growing sports
and leisure industry. The School of Sports,
Health and Leisure (SHL) vision of being the
leading educator in sports, health and leisure
provides students the assurance of programmes
that are both academically rigorous and industry
relevant.
SHL’s mission is to nurture students to be
industry ready professionals, through innovative
curriculum and research and developments, in
partnerships with stakeholders. This is achieved
through our innovative problem based learning
approach, involvement in industry-related R&D
projects, and a holistic individual development
roadmap which seeks to prepare students to be ready
professionals for the sports and leisure industry.
With Singapore aiming to be one of the top ten
sporting nations in Asia, there will be a demand for
sports science specialists to help advance the
performance of competitive athletes. Further, the
growing fitness and wellness industry will create
demand for well-trained fitness and personal
trainers.
The development of Singapore Sports Hub at
Kallang and the Integrated Resorts at Marina Bay and
Sentosa present many
opportunities. The sports and leisure industry will
continue to grow and mature with new and exciting
prospects. With the government’s strong aim to
promote the leisure sector, graduates will be well positioned to play
significant roles in many areas within the sports
business and leisure enterprises.
With increased demand for programmes that build resilience and ruggedness in Singapore youths, graduates are prepared with the foundation to lead groups in outdoor education and adventure pursuits.
In the fast growing health promotion industry, there is a demand for personnel with a good grounding in psychology, exercise and nutrition skills and knowledge to improve the well-being of our people
and address issues concerned with youth obesity, workplace health and active aging.
Singapore is fast gaining ground as a centre for world-class healthcare services, pharmaceutics and biomedical research. An excellent healthcare system in Singapore is essential not only for building a healthy and productive nation, but also for attracting foreign medical investments and travellers. The new diploma in Healthcare Administration (DHCA) programme will provide students with opportunities to fulfill the operations and administrative manpower needs of the growing healthcare industry.
SHL provides students the flexibility to pursue
their education in a holistic manner through
involvement in research and industry related
projects. Students are trained to acquire
specialised knowledge and skills to begin their
professional path in the vibrant sports and leisure
industry.
SHL firmly believes in developing professionals
in the various fields of the sports industry and to
this end, it has embarked on a series of initiatives
to provide multiple opportunities for students to
engage in industry specific skills and experience.
Graduates from SHL can expect to find a wide
range of careers in elite sports performance,
exercise and fitness, sports and leisure management,
outdoor adventure, and in the health and wellness
sector to achieve Singapore’s sporting aspirations.
Industrial Collaborations
The School endeavours to actively pursue collaborations with industry. It aims to cultivate strong ties with key industry drivers through a programme of staff attachments, joint research and development projects, as well as the establishment of cutting-edge laboratories.
