Diploma in New Media

Introduction : About the Programme

The Creative Cluster (arts and culture, design, and media) has been observed to be among the fastest growing sectors of developed economies such as those of the United Kingdom and the United States. In Singapore, the creative industry contributes 3% of the gross domestic product, and the Singapore Government’s plan is to double that contribution to 6% by 2012.

As detailed in such industry-specific blueprints as Renaissance City 2.0, Design Singapore, and Media 21, it is the Government’s vision to develop Singapore into a global city of excellence for the arts, culture, media and design.

Republic Polytechnic’s School of Technology for the Arts (STA) will not merely support Singapore’s nascent Creative Industries economy. STA intends to help build the Creative Industries by venturing into territory that is as yet unexplored. The Diploma in New Media (DNM) is RP’s first contribution to the turning of Singapore into a truly global media and arts centre

Programme Aims

The Diploma in New Media curriculum focuses on artistic creativity and innovative use of technology for the creation, reproduction, and preservation of the arts and media. Graduates will be both technology- and aesthetic-savvy, imbued with an understanding of and appreciation for the evolution (and revolutions!) of technology-aided media arts.

The Diploma in New Media (DNM) programme will prepare you with a firm foundation in core arts and technology skills as well as develop your life-skills through the innovative RP-Problem-Based Learning (RP-PBL) approach. Emphasis is placed on harnessing the capabilities of technology to unleash the power of creative imagination. You will be familiarized with creative technology tools, and carefully nurtured in the creative process.

To give you a further edge in the technological arts arena, you will be exposed to processes in these selected domains:

i. Art & Design
ii. Media & Entertainment

Your Future Career

Creative expertise and versatility will be the distinguishing characteristics of the Diploma in New Media graduate. Especial care has been taken to deliver a broad-based education in both technology and arts spaces to ensure long- term employability for graduates of our Diploma in New Media programme.

Graduates will be able to find employment in industries such as mass media and entertainment, advertising and public relations, science and defence, architecture and interior design, the performing arts and fine arts, engineering. The richly diverse career possibilities include positions as content creators, computer animators, game developers, design engineers, web designers, art directors, and creative management, and much more!
