Problem-Based Learning Foundation Course
The idea of Problem Based Learning has its roots in educational philosophy. Many prolific thinkers in education, such as Jean Piaget, John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Jerome Bruner and Don Margetson, pointed out that learning is an active social and cognitive process as opposed to a passive and mechanistic one. They assert that learning is more than a demonstration of the ability to regurgitate and remember facts but to create meaning of the information that is given and the ability to act in a well considered way. Problem Based Learning is an educational approach that seeks to operationalise these principles of learning to order to maximize student’s learning and help them perform in a rapidly evolving and highly complex work and social environment.
