Wireless Java Jam 2004 Participation

On the 8th of January 2004, our students took part in the Wireless Java Jam held at the Victoria Theatre.

The Wireless Java Jam is a Java™2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME™) Entrepreneur Development Programme targeted at Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) and organized by the Java Wireless Competency Centre (JWCC). The aim is to encourage innovation and promote entrepreneurship among students in building J2ME wireless technology and a comprehensive wireless business

400 students from eight tertiary institutions pit their Java Programming skills against one another to produce innovative and exciting applications for Java™ enabled mobile phones.

Republic Polytechnic’s first year SIT students formed 3 teams and after going through months of training, brainstorming and programming, submitted their first wireless mobile applications.

1. Dic’saurus : Mobile Dictionary and Thesaurus application
2. E-bus : Mobile Bus Guide and Information application
3. Smart Mobile : Application to Top up Ezlink and Calling card via handphone

The students were required to give a short presentation of their applications to a panel of judges few days before the event. On the day itself, they took part in the Code Jam Competition which required them to come up with a mobile application within 4 hours after being given a theme on the spot. In addition, a booth was set up to promote the applications to handset vendors, sponsors and all participants

The booth was set up with an artistic touch

Four of our students took part in the Code Jam and attempted to come up with an application from scratch within 4 hours. The theme was “Tourism”.
They also had to present their application to the judges for the Code Jam Competition
The students were much more relaxed at the booth after the stressful morning session.
One of the students also demonstrated our application to Mrs Tan Ching Yee, CEO of Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore
Mr Tay Kheng Tiong, Director of SIT, was presented with a plaque for Republic Polytechnic’s participation in Wireless Java Jam 2004
Inspired, we would return and do better next year!
