Stepping
into the theatre, the lights come down, the actors
make their entrance, and the show begins. But besides
the lights, set, sound and action, there is one other
crucial element that makes up the magic of theatre – the
words.
This November break, members of drama.republic have
come together for a series of workshops on drama,
covering playwriting, acting, voice projection, and
stage management. Guiding them through the process
of playwriting is CCC academic staff member Daniel
Teo, who has a wealth of experience writing in a
variety of mediums, from television to print.
Daniel also is one of the writers featured in MTV’s
The Pitch, a reality TV documentary program profiling
scriptwriters participating in an MTV scriptwriting
competition that could climax in a potential movie
deal with the station. The MTV film crew came down
to The Republic’s Library on 7 November to
catch Daniel in action, conducting a playwriting
workshop for drama.republic members.
Using two episodes from the popular TV sitcom Friends,
drama.republic members began to explore the dynamics
of a playscript – character, plot, and action.
As the workshops progress throughout November, they
will begin to piece together an outline for a short
play that will eventually be performed at CCC’s
Valentine’s Day celebration – Love Is
In the Air! Stay tuned for more details on that upcoming
performance in February 2004.
