Last Friday,
The RP Netball team finally proved critics wrong
and won its first and critical match in the Inter-Varsity-Polytechnic
(IVP) tournament! There are a total of 8 teams participating
in the IVP this year. The RP Netball team being the
youngest team, faced tremendous pressure to perform
and to say it is a tough match is an understatement.
The RP Netball team is definitely not fazed but
strongly motivated. We have been training very
hard for the past year and are raring to show
our mettle. The team arrived at Singapore Polytechnic
(SP) netball court on Friday. This time, we
are
up against Temasek Polytechnic (TP). The tension
was evident and completely replaced the usual
cheerful atmosphere. The match was extremely important
to
us.
The game started off on an excellent footing as
we scored our first goal within seconds of the
match. However, TP came back strong and it was
a tie match for the first quarter. The pressure
was definitely mounting. During the interval, the
coach devised new tactics and the fight continued.
It was definitely a highly-charged moment for many
of us watching the game as well as the players
too! The RP netballers were determined to win and
seized every opportunity to widen the score. The
defenders thwarted the opponents’ try at
the goalpost on countless occasions. On the other
hand, the goal shooters seized every opportunity
to net the goal. On the sidelines, you can hear
constant cheering for the netballers. The team
spirit and unity is truly uplifting and comforting.

Fatigue and injuries plagued the team by the third
quarter. BUT, the netballers refused to give up
and soldiered on. The match was a close one and
eventually when the umpire blew the final whistle,
no one had any clue what the score was. When we
learnt that we triumphed over TP with a score of
37-29, you could hear elated screams and cries!
(Incidentally, during the last IVP, we were thrashed
by TP with a score of 74-18!) We were overjoyed
and many of the netballers started weeping tears
of joy and relief! You could also see pride exuding
from the coach and advisers. From being at the
bottom of the tournament last year, we have advanced
and made a great leap of improvement.
As Carrie Wong, one of the netballers put it, “We
did something that we never did before in the history
of RP.” We are indeed very proud of the achievement
that the netballers have made. Well done girls!
The RP Netball team would like to express our
heartfelt thanks to the RP family especially the
supporters who took time off to come down and support
us. Thank you so much!
