The island’s been rocking with a brand new pulse. An emblem of youth, zest and sweet sounding melodies, Pulse has been making waves in the local music scene, playing out to massive audiences, making many friends along the way, and keeping the RP flag unfurled!
Not many teenagers get exclusive invitations to perform at the Esplanade. Following in the footsteps of their mentors Bob Tan; Jocelyn Ong and Varian Lim, this passionate bunch of five year-two students, Nur Sofiawati, Don Chan, Alvin Ganesh, Kong Jin Jie and Syed Mohd Hyder will be joining the big league by having the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre as their playground for one night come Saturday March 5th 2005, 7:30pm. Mark your calendars now!
Their set list will include an outstanding repertoire of finger-tapping radio-friendly rock ballads cleverly layered with layers of funk, bossa, blues and jazz.
Formed less than a year ago, Pulse, the senior band in Music.republic's Jammerz Arena, has steadily improved on its repertoire of cover songs to more than half-a-dozen original numbers and boy, have they been in great demand!
Pulse has performed for numerous events such as the Blue-sky Carnival at Suntec City, the Singapore Duck Race, Singapore MRT-Bus walk challenge, NTU’s Singapore Y, Double Yellow Line’s “Basic Theory”, and also at Places like the BFD pub at East Coast at the Youth Park - alongside established bands like RAFE (PowerJam Winners), RONIN, and Electrico (Singapore’s top-selling band).
The band also took up the challenge of entering the prestigious Power Jam Band Competition organized by radio station Power 98FM, and emerged Semi-finalists out of some 60 bands that took part.
Not content to just playing out the usual rocking tunes, the band has also played “live” acoustic tunes to usher in Christmas and New Year at Changi Airport’s two departure halls last December.
The musical influences of our five RP students are diverse. They span an astounding spectrum of genres, from soul to jazz, bossa nova to salsa, blues to rock and interestingly, metal to Latin! Thanks to RP’s unique pedagogical approach, the band found that holistic contributions from each member would ultimately create their own unique collective sound, which can be best described as a pleasing hybrid of funk, blues and radio-friendly rock. It is their hope that this refreshing blend of tunes will take our sunny island by storm.
A testament to RP’s emphasis on empowering our students, Pulse has chalked up this amazing track record (appended below) in just 10 months!
