In order to gain experience in IT competitions, 10 teams from Republic Polytechnic’s School of Information and Communications Technology (SIT) participated in the annual Gigahertz 2005 competition organized by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Computer Engineering Club (CEC). Our students pitted their IT skills against other teams from universities and other polytechnics.
This competition required participants to compete in 4 different categories: Logic Programming, IT Quiz, Multimedia and Technology. Under the category of Technology, participating teams were required to use their creativity to come up with enhancements for some common computer games such as Hangman, Pacman and Worm using Java, C# or VB.NET according to the specifications given. They also had to document the features they developed and present the game to the judge. Under Multimedia, the teams had to develop an online event registration application using ASP with SQLServer database to store the registration details.
For Logic and Programming round, the teams were divided into two groups to solve algorithmic problems and to complete a Quiz made up of 300 IT questions in various categories. As the quiz points were updated real-time, the pressure was intense!
The final Speed Quiz round and prize presentation ceremony was held on Sunday, 3 July. Although our teams did not win the first three prizes they had great fun and the camaraderie was obvious. All in all, it was a fantastic IT experience.
