Republic Polytechnic’s second Open House was held from February 17-19. These three days were extremely important as RP is a brand new polytechnic and our Open House is a very popular way for prospective students to get to know us.
Busloads of students started poured into our campus each day without fail. Students from various secondary schools were first given goodie bags that had information on the various courses that RP has to offer. Many of the students dropped by the library for the Woodlands Campus Presentation that were done by a group of specially trained Student Ambassadors. Students were astounded by the features of the upcoming state-of-the-art Woodlands campus and listened attentively while they were introduced to its architectural model.
At the second floor of the library, the course counselors were busy advising prospective students on the various diplomas and specializations available. Students could go for course counseling to ascertain which courses that RP has that are applicable to them.
As students left the library, following their Student Ambassador tour leaders, they entered the plaza where different IGs had set up booths that sold items ranging from the School of Applied Science t-shirts to candy floss and ice cream. CCAs such as drama.republic, the Malay Cultural Group and Indian Cultural Group had booths set up in the plaza while sports CCAs such as floorball, volleyball and basketball had theirs set up outside their CCA containers.
Performances were held in the plaza with emcees from the ambassadors.republic. Students had most fun on the second day when local DJs Jamie Yeo and Vernon A came down to host our Open House for two hours, giving out attractive prizes such as thumb drives.
Mission games were held in the Tower blocks. These games were designed to let students know more about the programs and courses offered by our School of Engineering, School of Information and Communications Technology, School of Applied Science, and our newly-launched School of Technology for the Arts.
Overall I think that RP’s open house was a real eye opener to show people how different RP is and how PBL works. The Open House was indeed a success as I’m sure it has convinced many prospective students that RP is THE place to be.
