Part I
The Tree Planting Ceremony was next, and together with Professor Low, Mr Lee
Hsien Yang (RP Board of Governors Chairman), and Mr Philip Ng (RP Board of
Governors Member), the Minister was invited to shovel and do some “muscle work”
on the tree. This is significant for RP in “Planting of A Republic of Champions”.
Minister Shanmugaratnam was then ushered off on a guided tour of the campus
site. Architects stood by to answer questions on the design and progress of the
Woodlands campus. On the tour, the Minister visited some mock-up facilities such
as a classroom, a lecture theatre, as well as a dry lab. The chief architect
responsible for the design of Republic Polytechnic’s Woodlands Campus, Mr
Fumihiko Maki, also accompanied the Minister on a tour around the outdoor lawn
area which overlooks the twelve study PODs (also known as the Learning Hub).
While the VIPs toured
the site, RP staff took part in an “Innovative
Department Photo Contest” where staff from various departments came together to
work on the most creative way to pose for a picture. The level of creativity
and the teamwork shown by the various departments were commendable. Everyone
contributed and participated, and all had fun. Even jackets, Christmas trees and
‘snow’ were spotted amongst the competing teams! It was as if Christmas had come
early in RP’s new Woodlands campus!
