27 May 2006 was the first day of the mid-year holidays for secondary school students. Most students would have chosen to stay at home to watch television or head out to catch a movie with friends. Yet 24 students from Marsiling Secondary School and Juying Secondary School came to Republic Polytechnic
(RP) early that morning.
Armed with cans of spray paint, these students were taking part in
"High Voltage" – a programme by Art.Republic and the Office of Corporate Communications.
This is an effort to reach out to secondary school students. "High Voltage" gave the secondary school students a chance to design and spray graffiti art pieces on hoardings in the school. The students came ready with their designs on what the words “high voltage” mean to them. With a little guidance from the Art.Republic members as well as Ms Diana Soh, the students started bringing their designs to life. Mr Saz, Juying Secondary School’s Art Club teacher, also joined his students in the spray painting.
The students started out by using pencils to sketch their designs on the hoardings so that they would have an outline to fill in the colours. After that was done, they sprayed over the pencil markings with black paint. One of the students from Marsiling Secondary School was a little hesitant about spraying on the panels, so our
RP students showed him how to use the spray paint and guided him along, giving him tips like not holding the nozzle too close to the surface as the lines created would be fuzzy. After his team mates observed how it was done, they had a go and soon, they were spraying
away like pros.
Ms Diana Soh also provided tips as she watched the students
do the spray painting. Marsiling Secondary School students’ art pieces had words like “hyper active” and lightning bolts that spanned the height of the panel;
whereas Juying Secondary School students had designs with words like “X-treme”, “Power” and “Success”.
After 3 hours, their pieces were completed. The students were satisfied with their efforts and we were also pleasantly surprised with the
completed artwork as none of them have actually done graffiti spray paint before. It was a productive morning and
everyone had fun. It was extremely gratifying to see their own work displayed for all to see. Each team then took pictures of their artwork, so that they would have something to remember it by. For Republic Polytechnic, we were more than happy to see a bounce in their steps as they left with a new confidence that they could bring their art, and perhaps
even their dreams, to life.
