Close to
50 guests mingled at RP’s Lecture room at W3 on 1 November 2006 at the launch of
the RP Enterprise Computing Learning Centre. The guests included management
executives from Citigroup, National Computer Systems, Housing and Development
Board, Singapore Press Holdings, IBM and the local media.
The event
got underway with RP's Deputy Principal Mr. Eden Liew, warmly welcoming the
guests and briefly introducing RP's IT savvy nature to them.
Mr.
Mervin Beng, Director of the School of Information and Communications Technology
(SIT), then continued with an introduction of the Enterprise Computing Learning
Centre and the plans for RP students. The Centre, with an IBM System z890
mainframe, will be used to train selected students from SIT and will offer
continuing mainframe education to industry practitioners over the next three
years. The plans will be supported by IBM via provision of training, curriculum
resources and collaboration opportunities with Mainframe end-users.
IBM's
Managing Director, Ms Patricia Yim, expressed IBM's commitment to work with RP
in providing students and industry practitioners with the much-needed mainframe
skills.
Ms Koh
Kok Theng, HDB's Head of Systems Management Unit, gave an informative
presentation on how the mainframe is used to run HDB's transactions and their
current projects.
IBM
invested a total of S$6.3million on RP’s Enterprise Computing Learning Centre.
It was a productive day for all of us as we open the mainframe doors to the IT
students of RP.
