Salsaz Run Riot in POL-ITE Floorball (M) Competition

Republic Polytechnic’s Floorball (M) team notched up their first victory in this year’s POL-ITE tournament by defeating the 2005/2006 Inter-Varsity champions and this year's tournament favourites, NYP, in a hard fought clash at ITE College East's Sports Complex on 6 November. After 5 months of training, RP Salsaz aimed to make a difference against a highly technical NYP team.

RP took the lead in the 2nd min when Mark Seow scored with a brilliant solo effort from the edge of the box. NYP then went in search for the equalizer and soon made amends.  Following their equalizer, they continued to press forward and was duly rewarded with their 2nd goal. The 1st period ended with the score at 2-1 in NYP’s favour.

After the team talk by the coach, Mr Amir, RP Salsaz roared back in the 2nd period. The relentless running by Zhu Jun Wei and Oswind Suriya Rosayro paid off in the 5th minute of the 2nd period when Oswind brilliantly evaded his markers and tapped the ball pass a helpless keeper after a through ball by Mark. Score 2-2.

The brilliant comeback was started within the next 2 minutes. Aaron Yeo Jiehan, cut a sharp corner and laid out the ball for Jun Wei to send RP into the lead for the second time in the game.  This time, RP never gave up the lead again.

RP kept up the attacking play throughout the 2nd period, with Mark Seow leading the way.  His brilliant peel and side-step scored RP's 4th and 5th goal, and completed his hat-trick. He was rightfully given the Man-of-the-Match award at the end of the game.

NYP made a tactical switch and tried to play a counter-attacking game. Time and again, their counter-attacks were thwarted by the dynamic defensive duo - Muhammad Zaki B Yusof and Chew Xuan Hui. When the ball did get past them, the NYP players found it impossible to find a way past national goalkeeper, Peh Wei Siang, who made no less than 12 acrobatic saves. The 2nd period ended with the score 5-2 in RP's favour.

RP picked up where we left off in the 2nd period, laying siege to the NYP goal and also defending well when called upon. In the 4th minute, Muhammad Hisyam B Ismail’s pressure caused a poor clearance from the NYP’s defender. RP’s Captain, Hazmi B Hasan, picked up the loose ball and sent it flying into the top left corner of the net for the 6th goal.

To add icing on the cake, a beautiful team set-up allowed young defender, Ng Yong Sheng Vernon, to knock in the 7th goal. In the closing minutes of the game, Muhd Sofian B Adnan took the ball and went on a brilliant solo effort past 3 defenders and drove the ball into the bottom right hand corner to seal RP’s victory. NYP's resilience was broken down by a resolute and determined performance by RP.  Final score 8-2.

Do extend your congratulations to your Floorball classmates if you see them.
