The Electronic Music Production (EMP) Crew, fresh
from scoring famous victories at the Heineken Thirst Studio finals in
September, have the Northeast CDC Music Mix firmly in our sights this
month.
An annual landmark quest to seek out fresh blood for the island's
burgeoning electronic music scene, the EMP senior students (year twos
and threes) trained hard under the watchful guidance of industry veteran
Feng Tan (Frontal Labs) to stunning results. Competing in the
preliminaries at Tampines CC over the weekend, we grabbed three out of
four final slots in the student category. The three were - Guo Yuan (STA),
Nelson Tan and Idayat B Mohamed Bahjuri (both SIT).
Making it through into the open category finals was
Kan Chee Hoo (SAS). Guo Yuan, first-runner-up at the Thirst Studio finals gives us some
insights into how she fared, "There's a lot more pressure, surprisingly,
because more is expected from you on the student level compared to
competing with the industry - everyone starts from the same level at
around the same time, so there's no good reason to muck up real bad. The
only difference is confidence, really."
Reflecting on his first foray into the world of competition, Idayat (VP
Operations in EMP), added that it has not been an easy journey. Falling back on
the virtues of patience and hard work to break through into the finals, he adds that all of them
have had to balance practice, commitments to supporting school-wide events on
campus and school work all at the same time. Echoing his sentiments, Nelson Tan
shares; "It has been a great journey for all of us. The numerous times we stayed
back to practise, the efforts to look for the right songs, they all paid off.
Despite only picking up the decks for less then a year, getting into the finals
is a huge achievement for me. To play in Ministry Of Sound will be a great
chance for us to experience the big sounds of a huge and well-known club."
EMP president Kan Chee Hoo proved he was made of sterner stuff by
competing in the open category of the competition. He shares, "Despite the high
level of competition, I got into the finals. Technically I wasn't as strong as
the rest of the contenders, but I believed my set had the ability to rock the
floor."
The Northeast Music Mix is organised by the
North East Community Development
