The Dragon Dance contingent of
the Republic Dragon and Lion Cultural Troupe was formed in August 2006 and it
has performed in many of the campus events such as the racial harmony day
celebrations and the Create Fiesta. Since its formation, the members trained
weekly in the evenings to polish their skills and to get up to speed (to public
performance standards) as soon as possible.
Finally a chance came to
showcase their skills in a public event. The troupe was invited to do a
performance as part of Project Youthépreneur's second key thematic event - World
on Wheels (WOW). The stage was set for the performance on 2 December 2006 at the
National Library located along Victoria Street.
Plans were made to showcase
all three performing components of the troupe, namely Lion dance, Dragon dance
and Big Flag. Preparations were carried out as early as two weeks before the
event.
On that Saturday, despite the
morning drizzles, the troupe was blessed with fine weather and the members were
all “dressed” up and ready to go. This event holds special meaning to the troupe
as this was also the first public performance for many of their first year
members.

Republic Dragon
and Lion Cultural Troupe and their colourful floats |
Upon the
troupe's arrival at NLB,
the well decorated floats and thunderous drum beats attracted a lot of attention
from the public. This was followed by a big flag performance which encompassed
many tricks and stunts while balancing a 9m tall pole and a triangular flag.
This attracted many curious onlookers and applause from the audience.

Big Flag Performances |
What followed next was the
highlight of the day: The RP Dragon Dance. The 10 minute performance was well
executed with high flying moves amidst adrenalin rushing drum beats. Although
there were occasional minor mistakes, it was definitely of a well respected
standard for a new dragon dance contingent. The performance ended with generous
applause from the crowd at NLB.
Keep a look out for the troupe
as they prepare to be bigger and better in the coming New Year. Way to Go RDLCT
