RP’s WeBlog @ RP Interest Group (IG)
conducted yet another momentous and enriching workshop on 16 December 2006 -
this time catering to a group of young adults from the non-profit organization
4PM, which is funded by the National Council of Social Service. 4PM approached
RP’s bloggers for a collaboration on conducting a workshop for their youth
volunteers to gain some handy skills in photoshop, flash MX and html coding.
The triple-themed workshop was carried out
over a period of 10 hours; and of course, we, the hardworking committee behind
WeBlog, couldn’t resist adding in some of our must haves- ethics of blogging and
games, so that more youths out there will be educated about the privilege of
having blogs and how to use them properly.
The day started out at 8.30am, where the
participants were registered, given an opening speech by Ms Leo Kwang Lin,
Assistant Director of RP’s Office of Corporate Communications, and given a tour
around RP’s spanking new campus. Next there were a couple of invigorating games
to get the participants stimulated and geared up for learning.
Our first workshop, the Ethics of Blogging
and HTML basics covered Blogging etiquettes/ethics and Hypertext Markup Language
coding, which is the simplest form of coding that enables one to create webpages
and edit blogs. These skills are useful for the youth volunteers to have a fair
grasp of some handy IT skills to run their own website in future.
As everyone knows coding workshops are
tiring stuff, participants were let off on a break and then it was another
action packed and exciting game to get their energy levels up again, before they
stopped for lunch.
After lunch, participants were taught Adobe
Photoshop techniques and learnt how to digitally manipulate pictures and create
special effects. Following that, the enthusiastic participants were then taught
how to use Macromedia Flash MX, another powerful tool for creating animated
pictures with effects.
The day came to a close by 5 pm, while
participants showcased their team efforts through a group project to demonstrate
the skills that they have learnt for the day.
All in all, it was an enriching experience
for the RP Bloggers. Everyone had lots of fun and worked hard as well! We were
glad to have provided this workshop to a welfare organization at no cost at all.
As our bloggers shared their skills, they also learnt new things from the
participants. Certainly a day well spent!
