Republic
Polytechnic (RP) hosted the Singapore Robotic Games (SRG) 2007 from 16 -18
January. The Guest-of-Honour for the opening ceremony was Mr Gan Kim Yong,
Minister of State for Ministry of Education and Manpower.
This is indeed a
momentous occasion for RP as it is the first time SRG is held here.
This event
attracted 810 participants from primary schools, secondary schools, junior
colleges, the Institute of Education (ITE), Polytechnics and Universities. RP
participated in three categories in this event: 1) Intelligent Robot Contest, 2)
Robot Colony and 3) RC Sumo Robot.
The Robot Colony
competition commenced after the opening ceremony of SRG 07 on 16 Jan. This is
the first time that RP is participating in the Robot Colony competition. The
students who participated are Wilson Oei, Zin Aung Soe & Tan Ming Hiong. The
team was supervised by their facilitators Mr Kadir Yusop & Ms Sally Zhang.
Twelve teams from
Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Ngee Ann (NP) Polytechnic
& Temasek Polytechnic (TP) participated in this gruelling event where 2 robots
are expected to collect 60 pellets of different colours (blue & green) and
deposit them into containers located at opposite ends of the platform in 6
minutes based on their colours. Despite the fact that we were only given a year
to design and build the robots, RP managed to clinch the 7th position
overall, and we beat 5 other teams from NP, SP, TP & NYP.
In the robot
sumo category, participants are required to build a self-contained mobile robot
which is able to push its opponent out of the specified ring according to the
tournament rules. Robot handlers are to operate their robots through the
radio-controlled console. The size of the radio-controlled and autonomous robots
shall not exceed 20cm (length) x 20cm (width) by any height. The robot can be in
any shape but the whole robot has to pass through a 20cm x 20cm hollow container
before a match. However, it may take any shape and size once the match begins.
The weight shall not exceed 3 kg excluding the radio-controlled console used by
the robot handler.
Finally, the
prize presentation ceremony was held on 18 Jan. RP won a Bronze prize in the
Intelligent Robot Contest. (Click

Their performances in the Robot Colony and RC Sumo
Robot as first-time participants also impressed many.
