The RP Career Fair 2007 took place on the 1st and 2nd
February 2007 (Thursday and Friday) at Republic Polytechnic’s Woodland Campus.
The event was graced by Guest-Of-Honour, Mr Ang Keng Loo, Senior Director of
Student Affairs.
The career fair featured 35 employers that promises over 4,000 job opportunities
from a wide range of industries including ‘hot’ industries such as civil
service, electronics, manufacturing and information technology to the RP’s
graduating cohort.
Some examples of highly recognisable employers that are participating in the
Career Fair include AFPD, Chartered Semiconductor, Civil Aviation Authority Of
Singapore, Plant Engineering, Singapore Aero Engine Services, Singapore
Airlines, Republic of Singapore Air Force, STATS ChipPAC, SSMC, Tech
Semiconductor, Toll (Asia) and Singapore Police Force.
Typically, most career fairs put a strong emphasis on education providers but
one would not find that to be the situation here. All participating companies in
RP Career Fair 2007 were offering real job opportunities to our graduates. This
clearly differentiated RP Career Fair 2007 from most of the other Career Fairs
and it met the event’s objective of providing real employment opportunities to
the graduates.
Available jobs offered by eager employers include Analyst Programmer,
Biotechnologist, Engineering Specialist, Equipment Associate Engineers, Network
Security Support Officer, Paramedic Specialist, Pharmaceutical Technicians,
Process Associate Engineers, Product Technologist (Equipment, Failure, Probe
Planning), Software Developer, Software Engineer, Web Designer and many more.
Jobseekers can expect to network, obtain career information and gain experience
talking to employers while widening their perspective on the current job market.
To further assist the graduates in their job search, RP had organised a “Club
Republic” booth and a “Student Career Centre’ booth that will provide both
graduate services and career services respectively to the students. Prior to the
actual Career Fair day, “Companies Fact sheet” information detailing the profile
of individual participating companies and the job opportunities offered by them
were all made easily available and accessible to the students so that they could
come to the career fair well prepared for the engagement with their potential
employers.
RP was pleasantly surprised by the good response to RP Career Fair 2007. Clearly
the number of companies showing their strong support for the Career Fair over a
2 day period for the graduating cohort (over 1000 students from 6 diploma
programmes) was a strong indication of a robust economy and a keen interest to
employ RP students who pride themselves in adopting a refreshingly different way
of learning known as Problem Based Learning (PBL). RP is the first educational
institute to adopt PBL approach for all its diploma programmes.
“Our institution’s unique culture and experience will ultimately lead towards
the development of independent and resourceful individuals that will be able to
contribute effectively in today’s globalised economy. This high level of
participation from industry in our Career Fair 2007 is a strong endorsement of
our Problem Based Learning approach” said Senior Director of Students Affairs,
Republic Polytechnic, Mr Ang Keng Loo.
During the career fair, our graduates were really spoilt for choices with over
4000 full-time job opportunities on offer by 35 participating companies at the
Career Fair. At last count, over 2500 applications were received by
participating companies. There were over 50 in-campus interviews conducted at
designated interview corners. Student emcees were present to liven up the
atmosphere and to engage student jobseekers and participating companies.
Specially tailored radio DJ programme for Career Fair, featuring ‘live’ graduate
interviews, was broadcasted over the airwaves to reach out to the entire campus.
Without a doubt, the primary goal of creating good contacts between student
jobseekers and potential employers for employment possibilities was achieved.
This was really one big networking event to remember. Here are snapshots of what happened on that day.
