On 22 Sep, Republic Polytechnic (RP) held a talk at the
Woodlands Library on “Choices Beyond ‘O’ Levels”. The talk was conducted in
Mandarin so as to address more Mandarin speaking parents. The aim of this talk
was to help students in making the right choices after receiving their ‘O’ level
results. The talk started with the overview of the MOE system, especially with
the new ‘A’ level curriculum, before covering details about the RP system.
One of the main concerns of parents is the furthering of
education after polytechnic. It was shared that RP’s diplomas are recognised by
the local universities, private universities and also overseas universities. In
fact, RP graduates who are interested in continuing with their education
overseas typically can obtain up to one third (or in some cases even up to half)
exemption from a degree programme. Currently, there are 72 RP graduates who are
studying in NUS and NTU, and 10 who are currently studying in Monash University,
among whom there are two enrolled in the honours programme.
Many among the audience brought up their concerns. For
example, how their child would be assessed under the RP system, and how they
would adjust to the new system of learning. They were assured that all students
would be given a fair assessment. As the students adapt to the problem-based
learning approach, they would tend to become independent thinkers who are
emboldened to speak up.
Overall, it was a good session as many relevant concerns
were addressed. We hope to organise more of such talks so that more people will
be aware of how to make the right choices after the ‘O’ levels. |
