RP’s Bloggers from the WeBlog@RP Interest Group were invited
to participate in the Active Aging Festival held at the Dhoby Ghaut open space
on 18 Nov 2007 organized by “The Council for Third Age”. According to the
six-dimensional model of wellness, the ‘intellectual’ element is an
important aspect
and WeBloggers were there to guide and help senior citizens acquire some IT
knowledge and skills at the intellectual booth. Actually, we were surprised to
learn that quite a number of them are already IT-savvy and the RP WeBloggers
were just glad to introduce more advanced blogging tips to them. Some of the
senior citizens we met at the carnival mentioned that they would be
delighted to join us in RP if we were to conduct blogging workshops for the
community.
It was quite a challenge for us when it came to the language
barrier between us and the elderly. Also, we spent some time
explaining the concept/uses of the computer mouse. Hence, we started from a basic
level and involved our elderly friends in playing fun, interactive games on the computer,
hoping to encourage them to learn faster.
At the end of the day, it was a great experience for us as we
learnt how to communicate with our senior counterparts, and we were happy we had
the opportunity to guide them in using IT. Participating in this carnival not
only gave us a chance to introduce the blogging world to the aged, we also learnt from them that, we too, can lead a vibrant, energetic and enriching
life as we mature in age.
Last but not least, we are really proud to have Lao Zha Bor as an
example of an avid blogger. Link: (http://laozhabor.blogspot.com/)
Cheers to active ageing! |
