On
12 November 2007, a press conference was held in Republic Polytechnic to
announce a new partnership between Republic Polytechnic, BMC Software and NCS
Group. This collaboration emphasizes a problem-based approach towards learning
within the rising field of IT Service Management (ITSM), and introduced all to a
new diploma called Diploma in IT Service Management
(DSM).
This partnership involves academic training that will narrow the IT skills gap
in Singapore/Asia, specifically leveraging on international best-practices of IT
processes.
A first-of-its-kind in Singapore, students enrolled in
DSM at Republic Polytechnic will experience hands-on learning in a real-world
data centre environment. They will use BMC Software’s Remedy Service Management
applications in the new ITSM practice laboratory located at Republic Polytechnic
to measure and maintain IT service levels, as well as discover, understand,
model, respond, and track IT system problems and business service failures. The
program provides realistic scenarios for students to experience how IT can be
continually managed and coordinated to provide better services and support to
the business. NCS, a BMC Premier partner specializing in ITSM, is providing the
implementation experiences of the BMC Remedy ITSM solution at Republic
Polytechnic.
Students will be taught IT best practices through delivery frameworks such as
ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library), and BMC's Business Service
Management (BSM) program. The field of ITIL best
practices is a growing discipline in Singapore and around the world. Fueled by
the increasing business demand on IT to provide better support for businesses
and organizations, ITIL provides best practice guidelines to create an efficient
and service-oriented IT infrastructure. BSM, which is BMC’s industry-leading
approach to putting ITIL best practices into action, helps organizations manage
the increasing complexity of IT infrastructure while supporting business
priorities and providing cost savings.
The introduction of this pioneering academic program
is a direct result of the recent shortage in highly skilled IT service
management professionals that Singapore and the Asian Pacific region have been
facing. According to Infocomm Development Authority’s (IDA) annual survey
on Infocomm manpower in 2006, IT Services has one of the highest compound annual
growth rates at 6.8 percent for 2007 to 2008, the second largest employment
group of infocomm manpower in Singapore.
The press event was addressed by Professor
Low Teck Seng (Principal and CEO, Republic Polytechnic),
Mr Chip Salyards (Director of Sales, Enterprise Service Management, BMC
Software) and,
Dr Chong Yoke Sin (CEO, NCS Group).
