Learning with a Difference at RP's Open House

RP's Open House from 15 to 17 December aims to provide a learning experience unlike others.

Four new diplomas will be introduced in 2008. They are Civil Aviation, Digital Entertainment Electronics, Game Design, and Hotel & Hospitality Management. Our friendly and experienced academic staff will be at these booths to answer queries from prospective students and parents.  RP is known for its courses in Sports, Health and Leisure too. If you still cannot decide, we have other courses too. Click here to find out!

In addition, this open house will allow prospective students, friends and family to experience the first Bossaball game in Singapore, be physically challenged at the Adventure Learning Centre, play a giant Sudoku board game, and many more.

Adventure Learning Centre

What is the Adventure Learning Centre?
Located at the far end of Republic Polytechnic is our prized Adventure Learning Centre (ALC). The ALC is a unique outdoor education facility with 20 different challenge elements that can cater to individuals, small groups and team-based engagement. Designed by Belgian challenge course experts Exponent Challenge Technology, the ALC also employs a personal continuous belay system and it is one of the most operationally efficient facilities in Singapore.

What can I do at ALC?
You can pit your fears against three interesting adventures - abseil off the highest abseil facility in Singapore, glide through a kayak-based challenge, and discover what exactly the Number Punch Game is. It is not just fun as you get to experience what problem solving skills are needed to get you through these physically challenging games.

What can I look forward to?
Our students can sign up for programmes offered by ALC to develop their leadership and communication skills.

Sudoku Challenge

What is this challenge about?
If you have played this popular game of Sudoku on your computer or puzzle book, experience it for yourself in a totally different perspective at RP’s Open House. A giant board of Sudoku is at our Centre for Science and Mathematics booth. Probably the largest man-made Sudoku in Singapore, this Sudoku is a test of your logic skills as you unravel its numbered puzzles.

How do I play the game?
You must have understood the game well enough by now; however here are some numbers you can digest. Filling in the partially completed grid, you need to place digits from 1 to 9 in each box exclusively in each horizontal, vertical and diagonal row, and also within the 3x3 grid boxes. If everything falls into place, you have completed the puzzle. To increase the intensity of this game, you are to complete the puzzle within a time set by the organiser.

Can you tell me more about this Centre?
The Centre for Science and Mathematics (CSM) aims to provide all students at Republic Polytechnic with a firm grounding in the basics of scientific knowledge and mathematical reasoning ability. These abilities are not only fundamental to all disciplines offered at RP but also an essential part of a well-rounded education.

What can I look forward to as a new student?
The first-year curriculum for all RP students consists of a common core of five interrelated strands, each of which comprises two modules – one in the first semester, continued by another in the second semester. Of the five strands, two are offered by the Centre for Science and Mathematics:
• Basic Sciences I & II
• Computing and Mathematical Methods I & II

Bossaball

What is new about this game?
Bossaball is a new sporting phenomenon that has been launched in countries such as Spain, Belgium and Brazil. This will be the first time Bossaball is introduced in Singapore at RP’s Open House! A new sport that combines the best of volleyball, soccer and acrobatics, it can be played both indoors and outdoors with an inflatable giant cushioned-court.

How do I play this game?
With much fanfare, Bossaball is usually played with accompanying samba music. The game comprises three to five players on each side and has rules adopted from a volleyball game. The novelty of Bossaball lies in its scoring system – hitting the opponent’s court which is made up of a pitch of trampolines and bouncy inflatables. No points will be awarded if the ball hits the bossawall – a unique area marked by rings around the trampolines. Each team tries to score up to 25 points in a set and winning three sets wins you the game.

What can I do at this open house?
Prospective students, friends and their families can enjoy this sport at RP’s open house. A tour around the campus is a must. If you insist on taking short cuts, please head towards the sports complex. This state of the art complex is an architecture marvel and a one-stop sports arena for our students.

Can you tell me more about the company who brought in Bossaball?
Bossaball Singapore Pte. Ltd. is a new Singapore start-up to represent Bossaball in South East Asia. It aims to promote this sport to the masses and at a competitive level. For more information, visit www.bossaball.com.sg
