The RP Wushu Interest Group (IG) has done us proud again by winning 7 Gold, 4
Silver and 4 Bronze medals at the 6th Hong Kong Wushu International Festival
2008. These victories also put RP at the 1st runner-up position in the overall
group ranking at this prestigious event.
The 6th Hong Kong Wushu International Festival was held between 7 – 11 March
2008 at the Hong Kong Ma-On-Shan Stadium. There were more than 3,000
participants taking part in this event, making it the biggest ever Wushu
competition in Hong Kong. This is the first time our Wushu Team
participated in this event so it was a great learning experience for us as we
were able to witness the skills of other Wushu exponents from different
countries during the competition.
It
was tough competing with so many international players in Hong Kong and the
atmosphere was tense in the stadium. However, our Wushu team persevered and did
a great job:
Ching Ying Qing, who learned Wushu
for only three years in RP clinched two gold medals in the long-fist (长拳)
and straight-sword (剑术)
events. With his agile movements and quick reflexes, he impressed the judges
and defeated a tough competitor from the Ukraine Wushu Federation.
Apart from Ching, others like Hie Dao Qiu, Draycott How Wei Liang and Lee Yong
Khim also clinched a gold medal each in the categories they took part in. Hie
Dao Qiu was in the soft weapon category (软器械),
and with his nine-chain whip (九节鞭),
he was powerful and beat his opponents from other countries. In the fist (拳术)
category, Draycott How Wei Liang clinched a gold medal in the Shaolin fist (少林拳)
subcategory while Lee Yong Khim emerged victorious in the drunken fist (醉拳)
subcategory.
Leow Jun Heng and Lee Yong Khim both secured a silver medal each for the
broadsword (刀术) and Cudgel
(棍术) items respectively.
Leow Jun Heng also won a bronze medal in the cudgel (棍术)
category. Two bronze medals were won by Chng Chin
Ling in the Southern Fist (南拳) and cudgel
(南棍)
routines.
In the female category, Ng Yi Hui secured her gold medal in the broadsword (刀术)
routine and clinched silver in the long-fist (长拳)
routine. On the other hand, Chong Mei Ying obtained a gold in the Spear (枪术)
routine and a silver in the sword (剑术)
routine. Finally, Jean Ng also won two bronze medals in her long-fist and
straight sword routines.
Accompanying the RP Wushu Team on this trip are our friends from Wu-Fang (武坊),
and they have also achieved equally good results in this competition by winning
gold and silver medals.
We would
like to thank our advisor, Dr Simon Chang and our Coach, Xue Xing Fu for their
invaluable guidance and devotion.
The RP Wushu IG would like to thank Create/TRCC, OSG and OES for their
continuing support, as our achievement would not have been possible without
them.
Our
achievements in this event have greatly motivated and boosted the morale of our
IG members. We hope to do even better to bring glory to RP in future.
