On 12 April 2008, filled with enthusiasm and excitement, students from the Republic Polytechnic
(RP)
Indian Cultural Group (ICG) spent their Saturday in a most memorable way by spreading
the festive cheer of the Indian New Year and Sikh’s New Year by volunteering at
Bukit Batok Home for the Aged.

The home has close to 200 aged residents. These residents are mostly
disabled, immobile and terminally ill individuals who do not have much
opportunity of venturing out of the home. Most of these residents are also
destitute and have been placed in this home by the state.
Our students brought smiles and laughter to the residents by interacting,
playing games like Bingo and engaging them in a dance-along session. This was followed
by our students serving food and refreshments to them.
Some even rose to the occasion by personally feeding some who needed extra care.
Our students' hospitality, care and love brought delightful smiles and some
tears to the residents.
This hands-on-experience with the folks was an eye-opening experience for all
our students. Apart from having fun, our students learned about the importance
of caring for the under-privileged and aged in the community and the need to reach out to
people who are in need of help, care and love.
This outreach effort by RPICG will not be a one off event as more of such
community projects are in the pipeline. We are indeed looking forward to
more similar community outreach programmes and extend our help as much as
possible.
