Republic Canoeists bring in Glory for RP

On 7th and 8th June 2008, the girls from the Canoeing Interest Group shocked the local canoeing scene in the highly competitive National Women’s Kayaking Competition by winning a total of 4 golds, 4 silvers and 7 bronzes. The RP Canoeists fought through the events despite having to go through races back to back from heats to finals, fighting a total of 26 races over the entire competition with the traditional powerhouse entrants such as NTU, NJC and NUS.

Every girl from the team had only one focus - to go all out to win races!

The 2 K-4 crews comprising Lavender Ong, Tan Qifang, Chang ZhenYu, Gao Shumin Joanne and Neo Sihong, Beverly Kim, Chang ZhenYu, Gao Shumin Joanne, stole the Gold, Silver and Bronze for the 1000m, 500m and 200m races respectively despite the fact that it was the first time they participated in these k-4 races. They certainly put up a glorious fight against powerhouse K-4s such as NUS and SRJC.

The K-1 200m event saw a remarkable performance from Lavender Ong and Tan Qifang as they fought their rivals to make it into the finals. Lavender Ong finished off with a bronze medal while the k-2 200m finals saw the duo of Tan Qifang and Lavender Ong stealing the spotlight again by clinching a Bronze Medal.

The weekend saw a tremendous performance from the Team Republic Canoeists. They are definitely a testimony to the entire canoeing scene that Team Republic is a indeed force to be reckoned with.
