On the 28th of June 2008, Republic Polytechnic (RP) sent
our lifesaving team to participate in the 9th NUS invitational
competition. RP sent 2 teams, A and B, to compete in this prestigious annual
lifesaving competition. With less than 2 months leading up to the competition,
each and every one of us followed a vigorous training regime to ensure that our
strength and level of fitness will be up to standards. We practiced 3 times a
week at the pool.
In total, 13 schools took part in this annual competition. There was an
opening ceremony to officiate the event, where each school
was represented by a flag bearer marching to the beat of the drums. Very
shortly, the clock struck 12 and immediately everyone could feel the atmosphere
tense up as the
participants got ready to take up their positions.

RP’s team took part in 20 events and did quite well for the
Manikin Carry as well as Line Throw events. This was a result of our unique
training which focused on endurance training. Temasek Polytechnic emerged
overall winner of the competition followed by the National University of
Singapore. Although RP did not return with any medals, this competition was an
extremely good experience for us. Being a relatively young team, it was a good
opportunity to gain exposure by participating in such competitions. It
also gave us the opportunity to benchmark ourselves against our counterparts in
other schools. Through this experience, our team spirit grew stronger as we
learned the importance of unity.
The next challenge for RP’s swimming team would be the Nationals.
With enough perseverance and effort, we will strive to win; and we believe we
can.
