Republic Polytechnic organised and hosted the first Invitational Silat Championship (ISC) which took place over two weekends in June 2008 (6th, 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th June). The road to this championship was not an easy one as the organisers who were also athletes had to juggle their time between school, organising the competition and training.
Just like any other Silat competition, we had the artistic and combat categories. One may ask, “What was the highlight of this event?” In this competition, we included the “Creative Single” for the artistic category and the “Best of The Best” for the combat category. This move was to make Silat into a more mainstream sport and to add a little spice to this sport.
The whole championship started off with
the “Creative Single” event with 3 of our exponents executing their flawless
choreographed movements to impress not only the judges but also the crowd as
well as the Guest-of-Honor. The first day of competition ended with RP’s Team
Se’latra rounding up 2 Gold (Artistic Male Doubles, Creative Male Solo) and 3
Silver (Creative Male and Female Solo, Artistic Female Doubles).
The 2nd day of competition
saw the rest of the artistic category and the start of the much awaited match
category for all weight classes. Team Se’latra bagged 1 Bronze from our Regu
girls (Artistic Female Team).
As the competition advanced towards the
final day, there were a number of casualties from the home team but our warriors
kept their spirits up. Our fighters fought hard and were not at all intimidated
by their opponents. Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Nanyang Technological University
(NTU) and Republic Polytechnic (RP) were neck in neck in the race for the
Overall Championship title.
At the end of the Invitational Silat
Championship, NP and NTU were placed Overall champion and 1st runner
up respectively, and RP clinched the 2nd runner up title.
Nevertheless, it was still an achievement although we faced lots of challenges
from planning to executing and to compete in this championship. Below is the
