Aquatic Interest Group wins 4 gold 2 silver and 4 bronze in IVP Swimming 2008

11th and 12th of October 2008 marked another annual swim meet which would be added to the chapters of Singapore’s swimming history.

Led by our team manager Johann Lim, a first year student from the School of Engineering, it was the second time that Republic Polytechnic’s Aquatic IG took part in such an important and prestigious meet and we had certainly brought glory back home. Our junior swimmer had broken a swim event record and we brought home a total of 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

Here are the results as follows:

The female team consisted of Jin Zhuang (SHL), Khoo Min Hui (SHL), Jina Woo (SHL), Adelyn Tan (SEG), Cassandra Chua (SAS), Kell Chew (SHL), Rebecca Quek (SHL) and Kasmiranti (SHL).

Cassandra Chua, a first year student from the School of Applied Science, broke a record for the 50 meters Butterfly event with a timing of 30.77seconds. It was certainly an event worth celebrating as no junior athlete in RP had achieved something so astonishing at a first attempt before. She then went on to clinch:

3 Gold medals:
-
200 meters Individual Medley event with a timing of 2minutes 42.81 seconds
-
100 meters Butterfly event with a timing of 1minute 12.44 seconds
-
200 meters Freestyle event with a timing of 2minutes 25.68 seconds

1 Silver medal:
- 50 meters Backstroke event with a timing of 35.77 seconds

Jina Woo, a second year student from the School of Sports, Health and Leisure, also clinched:

1 Bronze medal:
- 800 meters Freestyle event with a timing of 12 minutes 06.61 seconds

The male team made up of Benjamin Kheng (STA), Julien Lim (SIT), Vibrant Lee (SEG), Jonger Chua (SAS), Li Ning (SHL), Dharsaka Hasanka (SHL), Lim Long Fei (SHL), Andy Tan (SAS) and Goh Si Jie (SEG). Similarly to the female team, the guys had done a great job as well.

Benjamin Kheng, a second year student from the School of Technology for the Arts, clinched:

2 Bronze medals:
-
200 meters Individual Medley event with a timing of 2 minutes 32.03 seconds
-
200 meters Freestyle event with a timing of 2 minutes 14.76 seconds

Julien Lim, a second year student from the School of Information and Communications Technology, clinched:

1 Silver medal:
- 50 meters Breaststroke event with a timing of 31.06 seconds

For the team event which consisted of Li Ning (SHL), Julien Lim (SIT), Benjamin Kheng (STA) and Dharsaka Hasanka (SHL), the boys clinched:

1 Bronze medal:
- 200 meters Medley Relay with a timing of 1 minute 59.34 seconds

On the whole, every member of the team deserved to be applauded as they have put in their best effort and persevered on throughout the two days of the competition. The team would also like to thank all their supporters who had cheered and motivated us throughout the whole process of the competition. We deeply appreciate your efforts.
