POL-ITE 08/09 Bronze Medal for the Republic Polytechnic Netball girls

22nd October 2008 marked the start of the annual Polytechnic-ITE (POL-ITE) Championships. It was hosted by the Institution of Technical Education at ITE East Simei from 22nd October – 7th November 2008. Netballers from all polytechnics and ITEs gathered to battle off in this major competition.

Netball Team Republic kick-started the game with Combined ITE. Having home ground to their advantage and together with their fervent supporters, Netball Team Republic rose up against the rising pressure and focused on giving their all. The girls played with confidence and put on every shot whenever the ball was in their possession. Once again, Netball Team Republic broke the hearts of ITE and their supporters by leading a 45-24 score.

Having to face the defending champion, Temasek Polytechnic (TP), Netball Team Republic was determined to give it their all or walk out of the court with regrets of not trying their best. Nervousness set in as mistakes accompanied them in the first quarter. The girls  persevered on to fight for glory. Unfortunately, it was a bitter-sweet ending for the team as they were defeated 29 to 42. However, their spirit of victory still fired on as there were 3 more matches to catch up on.

Netball Team Republic was determined that their match with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) would be a win. Having dominated the whole game from the start to the end, SP seemed to have struggled to keep up with the scores. Despite their tall shooters, the defenders of the Republic Polytechnic (RP) did not allow that to a hindrance to them. It was a heartbreaking match for SP as Netball Team Republic took the win of 54 to 25.

The next game against Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) was the toughest of them all. Both sides displayed excellent skills and strong determination to fight hard till the end. Netball Team Republic was merely leading by 1 goal for the first three quarters and NYP managed to draw the score line further to 17 goals. Eventually, Netball Team Republic was defeated 23 - 32. The Coach of Nanyang Polytechnic shook hands with Netball Team Republic’s Coach and said, “You always give me a good fight.”

The last game with Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) was a crucial match as it determined Netball Team Republic's chance of getting a medal. In the beginning, the scores were on par. Unfortunately for NP, a fury of goals followed as RP exposed the frailty of SP’s attack, by employing a quicker flow of play which made RP take home the Bronze medal.

The ranking of schools are as follows:

- Temasek Polytechnic 1st place
- Nanyang Polytechnic 2nd place
- Republic Polytechnic 3rd place

Well done girls!
