Republic Polytechnic Dragons women’s team clinches gold medal at the SDBA Master Series 2008

This year, the Singapore Dragon Boat Association launched the first SDBA Master Series 2008 for women in conjunction with the Men’s SDBA Master Series 2008 at Bedok Reservoir. The best of 5 Series will count towards the total points after the completion of the Series. A SDBA Master Series Challenge Trophy will be up for grabs for the team with the highest total points as well as a cash prize of S$3,000.00 for the men’s category (1st Position) and S$1,500.00 for the women’s category (1st Position) at the conclusion of the Series in November 2008.

On the 9th November 2008, our Republic Polytechnic (RP) Dragons were mentally and physically prepared to fight their way to the grand finals which marked the final 6th Master series this year.

In a nail-biting finish for the Men’s Grand Final event, RPDB men’s team fought their way with immense effort against powerhouses Mountbatten CSC and NTU. Unfortunately, SP came out strongly by calling out for earlier charge at the 200metre mark before the finishing line. Our boys came in 4th position but according to the total points accumulated from the past series, we were actually in the top 3 position in the list. The Men’s team captain, Lim Kar How commented, “Although we did not achieve our goal, we managed to maintain our standard and show everyone that RPDB is not a pushover”.

As for the women’s team, we overcame setbacks in the earlier heats and rallied to clinch the gold medal in our final 6th master series. With a vast hunger for victory, RPDB women’s team finally beat the unbeatable and came in 1st position, leading powerhouses like NUS, NJC and NTUC (National Team). It was a surprise result as mentioned by the commentator during the prize giving ceremony, because we finally made it right and showcased tremendous improvement in this final series. As concluded by the women’s team, “Our triumph is based on working together as a team and having faith in ourselves that we can do it despite any challenges we face. Nothing is impossible to achieve if we set our minds to it”.

The achievements and lessons learnt will be a driving force for our next upcoming competition, Singapore River Regatta on 22nd and 23rd November. We urge for supporters to come and witness this most anticipated and exciting race in the dragon boat calendar.

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” You should test your own limits. No one ever achieved greatness by playing it safe. What you believe will set the limits of what you achieve. - Nobel Laureate Anatole France
