The Eureka.01
Life Science Symposium, held on the 17th September
2004, played host to numerous prominent luminaries
in the biomedical science industry. The event began
after the opening address delivered by the Principal
and CEO of Republic Polytechnic, Prof Low Teck Seng.
Two keynote lectures were delivered in the course
of the morning, the first, a macroscopic view of
the private sector biomedical science research and
development industry. The address, delivered by Assoc.
Prof Lam Kong Peng, Director, Biomedical Research
Council (BMRC), emphasized on the growth sectors
and initiatives planned by the BMRC.
The 2nd keynote address was delivered by Prof Jackie
Ying, Executive Director, Institute of Bioengineering
and Nanotechnology, which reported on the wide range
of projects driven by the IBN from drug delivery
to new transfection materials. Another key event
was a panel discussion on the paths to a career in
the biomedical sciences, which drew a whole slew
of questions from the approximately 250 participants.
Other prominent scientists who delivered their address
included specialists from the field of bioprocess
technology, Parkinson’s disease, probiotics
and Malaria.
