Unveiling of Woodlands Campus Winning Design

The winning design for the Woodlands Campus was unveiled on 29th September 2002.

Present at the event were the Minister of Education, Rear-Admiral (NS) Teo Chee Hean and Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower, Dr Ng Eng Hen, members of the Republic Polytechnic Board of Governors and invited members of the press. Prior to the minister's arrival, members of the press had the opportunity to interview Mr Fumihiko Maki, the award-winning architect who conceptualised the winning design.

Mr Maki explained the rationale behind the design concept and highlighted its distinctive features which included 11 separate buildings called Learning Pods and 2 public gathering spaces named the Agora and the Lawn.

Upon arrival, both RAdm Teo and Dr Ng were ushered to the 3rd level of Strathmore block and briefed on the design concept by Mr Philip Ng, a member of The Republic’s Board of Governors. RAdm Teo was particularly impressed with the concept of the Agora as a public meeting space and the close attention paid to ensure The Republic’s unique pedagogical philosophy was accurately interpreted and integrated into the design. Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Lee Hsien Yang, led a discussion with RAdm Teo on the selection of the winning design. RAdm Teo then viewed the other two designs that were shortlisted by the Selection Panel.

RAdm Teo was later briefed on the developments for the temporary campus at Kay Siang by Mr Lim Tuan Seng, Director of Office of Estates.

Tokens of appreciation were presented to external members of the Assessor and Selection Panels who were instrumental in identifying the winning design of The Republic’s permanent campus. The press held an informal interview with RAdm Teo following the presentation. The event concluded with a delectable buffet tea spread.
