It augured well for Republic Polytechnic
(RP), a fledgling institution, that so
many schools responded favourably to
its School Outreach Programme. Briefly,
this programme aims to raise awareness
of The Republic and what it can offer
graduating students who are keen on getting
a Polytechnic Diploma through a series
of scheduled talks in secondary schools.
For the month of September, a total
of 16 schools have agreed to schedule
special sessions during school hours
for The Republic staff to talk to their
students. So far, over 1300 students
have attended The Republics series
of School Outreach Programme in 6 secondary
schools and an expected 1900 students
will be attending similar talks in the
month of October. The first talk was
given by The Republics Principal,
Professor Low Teck Seng, on 9th September
to students from Bukit Merah Secondary
School. On the same day, Professor Alwis,
Director of Academic Affairs, made his
presentation to over 200 students from
Bishan Park Secondary School.
Without exception, the schools we visited
were hospitable, attentive and responsive.
This has been extremely encouraging to
all of us. First, the wonderful response
indicates that The Republics presence
is well-registered among those whose
attention we seek: principals, heads
of department, teachers and students.
Next, it proves that the adventurous
adoption of the Problem-Based Learning
pedagogical approach arouses much interest.
Most importantly, the Q&A sessions
show that The Republics philosophy
and vision were well-understood by the
students.
We are grateful to all participating
schools for their strong support of our
Outreach Programme. In particular, we
appreciate very much the time and effort
of the staff-in-charge without whose
help The Republic team would not have
been able to make their presentations
confidently and effectively. What we
look forward to next is more schools
calling us for information and scheduling
our speakers for post-exam activities
such as Talks on Polytechnic Education
after O levels.
