Workshop: The process towards implementing PBL -
Pieces for the puzzle
|
| The Republic Polytechnic
held its first public workshop on the 16th
September 2002 at its nascent premise in
Kay Siang Road. The workshop was attended
by more than 50 participants from both
tertiary institutions and other statutory
boards. The workshop was conducted by A/P
Egon Moesby, Director of Studies, School
of Basic Studies in Science and Engineering,
Aalborg University. Aalborg University
is one of the pioneer universities in Europe
that has fully adopted the use of problem-based
learning as its educational pedagogy since
1974. During the workshop, A/P Moesby shared
with the audience the evolution of the
tertiary education in Denmark and the vision
for Aalborg University to deliver an educational
system which has great internal adaptability
to respond to developments in technology,
society and economy. He also highlighted
some of the key organizational and administrative
issues to be considered when implementing
Problem-Based Learning in existing educational
institutions. |

 |
| A/P Alwis, Director
of Academic Affairs, Republic Polytechnic,
also took the opportunity to present
at the workshop the Republic Polytechnics
pedagogy for Technical Education.
The Question and
Answer session at the end of the presentations
generated a lot of discussion covering
a broad sprectrum of areas like assessment
of students/facilitators, training
of facilitators, curriculum design,
differences between students trained
in PBL environment and traditional
environment, etc. While there were
clearly differences in the way PBL
is being delivered by Aalborg and the
other tertiary institutions here, all
were in concurrence about the philosophical
justification for PBL as an alternative
to instruction-based approach.
